Abstract

Native chicken is one of the livestock commodities developed to meet the animal protein needs of the community. The meat and eggs are highly nutritious for consumers, and the quality of the meat is different from broilers. Native chicken is identified with healthy chicken because it is cultivated without vaccines, chemical additives (synthetic), and starts from DOC (day old chick) until harvest. with maintenance in accordance with animal welfare principles. The information about the behavior of KUB chickens that are kept intensively in cages and freely is still very less. So, the study about the behavior of KUB chickens is needed in order to produce optimal. Behavior can represent the physiological conditions, feelings, and response of chicken towards changes environmental conditions. This study was conducted in close house at Indonesian Center for Livestock Training in Batu City East Java. The study used the one zero sampling method, observations were carried out in the morning (08.00-09.00 WIB) and afternoon (15.00-16.00 WIB) for 7 days. The KUB chicken population that used in this study were 5 males and 30 females that were 20 weeks old.
The result showed that the highest activity in the morning is; eating activity (21,8%), drinking (19,6%), perch (17.8%), grooming (16,4%) locomotion (14,4%), agonistic (2,8%), mating (2,4%), elimination (2,6%), and rest (2.2%), while the highest activity in the afternoon is eating (21,4%), drinking (20,2%), grooming (12,4%), locomotion (12,8%), perch (13,8%), agonistic (2,8%), elimination (12,8%), rest (2,2%), and mating (1,6%). It was concluded that KUB chickens aged 20 weeks as a whole described behavioral behavior in order to fulfill their level of welfare in preparation for maximum production.
